    Humanistic Tourism - A Possibility?

    Humanistic Tourism – a possibility?

"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."
    Augustine of Hippo

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime."
    Mark TwainThe Innocents Abroad/Roughing It

Traveling is hailed as key to discovering humanity and exploring the unknown while discovering oneself. Tourism, in contrast, has often been viewed as a source of cultural imperialism, environmental destruction, and conflict between visitors and visited. In this conference, we are exploring how tourism can be rethought and enacted as a force for common good creation.  We will explore the tourism industry through a humanistic lens and discuss how tourism can build character, protect dignity and promote well-being within the planetary boundaries.

The conference will be held in a center of tourism, Sardinia, Italy by the Humanistic Management Network and its Italian Chapter, October 13 and 14, 2015. During this time Cagliari offers a beautiful glimpse into the pearl of the Emerald Sea and will provide a fitting environment for thoughtful conversation. In a first part we will explore the conceptual underpinnings of humanistic tourism, in a second part we will explore how humanistic tourism has been applied and finally we explore the conditions under which humanistic tourism understood as travel that protects dignity and promotes human well-being within the planetary boundaries is feasible.

Conferences by the Humanistic Management Network stand out for their conceptual rigor but also the high-quality interaction they foster between thought leaders in academia, practice and policy. Our conferences provide ample room for conversation and thoughtful interaction to build relationships for future collaboration ultimately aimed at shaping the agenda for a transition towards a life-conducive economy.

We invite you all cordially to be part of this journey!
