    Friends,

We invite you to participate in the All-Academy Themed (AAT) PDW on "Reimagining Governance as the Operating System for a Sustainable Planet" on Sunday, August 9th from 11:15 AM to 2:15 PM at the Vancouver Center Centre Room 001. You can find the session details at: http://my.aom.org/program/SessionDetails.aspx?sid=17154.

Operating within the confines of our current socio-political systems, we are struggling to articulate a compelling rationale beyond an economic argument for sustainability within and outside the business world. While the need for action to combat global warming, social inequities, pollution and human health is paramount, governments around the world haven't been able to mobilize the collective power to solve these and other challenges. Our inability to inspire and motivate collective action could be due to the socio-political and economic systems in which we are embedded, and the rules of these systems that influence our behaviors. The default rules of our current systems may perpetuate the very actions that undermine sustainable initiatives, for instance, by pursuing economic growth over all other goals. What we need instead is a new conceptualization of governance that could lead to a sustainable planet. This PDW seeks to identify and develop new ways of governance that direct how social systems should operate to spur positive global action towards sustainability.

We will kick-off with a moderated panel discussion featuring three experts in the field of sustainability and governance: André Reichel (Karlshochschule International U., Germany), Tobias Hahn (Kedge Business School, France) and Michael Yow (Corporate Knights Capital, Canada). Their brief opening remarks on the topic as well as additional materials relevant to this PDW can be found at:

The primary objective of this PDW is to provide Academy Members from different divisions the opportunity to work together to address the challenge of designing a new governance system for a sustainable planet. Using the Design Thinking for Scholars framework developed by the Network of Leadership Scholars, participants will work on addressing the challenge. Subject matter experts, video and other multimedia information will be available to participants to work through and identify new solutions to the design challenge. The PDW will conclude with a summary of design outcomes. The participants will leave with a set of new research ideas and a working knowledge of the Design Thinking for Scholars.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at our session in Vancouver,

    Best wishes,

    --Nagaraj
