Competitive dynamics research seeks to understand what specific firms do when they compete with specific rivals. However, much of this research and its central ideas have tended to focus on large established firms in relatively stable environments. Thus, this PDW focuses on competitive dynamics in dynamic environments, with particular attention given to the role of entrepreneurial ventures in such contexts.
This workshop will consist of two parts. In the first part of the workshop, seasoned and emerging scholars active in this area will briefly present on heretofore sparsely examined contexts within the realm of competitive dynamics research, specifically those in which there is a high degree of environmental uncertainty and/or the basis of competitive advantage/competition is rapidly changing (e.g., biotech, console video gaming, newspapers, e-cigarettes). The PDW will also focus on contexts in which entrepreneurial ventures and nonmarket players are the "attackers", rather than incumbent firms/market players.
The second part of the workshop will consist of roundtables designed to engage the attendees in a discussion about the future of competitive dynamics research in such contexts. The goal of the roundtables is to begin to derive research questions that are likely to form the basis of a platform for future research. Attendees who would like to submit questions/topics for the roundtables should email them to Jason Pattit (patt2744@stthomas.edu) prior to August 5th. Attendees who do not submit questions/topics will be invited to stay and take part in the roundtable discussion of their choice.
Please put this session on your calendar! As the organizer, my goal is to have a session that will engage scholars from various theoretical and methodological traditions in a dialogue that brings to light new and exciting questions about competitive dynamics in dynamic environments.
See you in Vancouver!
