Great to hear from you. I’m enthused about the new, blended entrepreneurship class that I will teach starting this fall, using the lean canvas. Because of the interest this topic has generated recently, I have decided to cc: the ENT listserv.
Here goes: this fall, I am team-teaching a freshman “U-Course” with a colleague, where the 100 enrolled students will not be in a lecture room, but in a high-tech, “makerspace” classroom. Students will be grouped into teams of ten using CATME software, they will learn skills with Grovo training software, and most of all, each of the ten groups will start their own business.
The business can be a commercial enterprise, a social enterprise, or a not-for-profit (As an accounting professor, I will make sure they get a heavy dose of revenue and cost projections using Excel…all students will master basic spreadsheet software during the course, without using debits and credits; see this video<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wg1jnLG-bqQ> if you want a taste of how I will do this). Students will work very hard early on to understand the customer/user, and whether anyone might be interested in buying the goods or services to increase the gain or reduce the pain of the status quo.
Much of their homework coming into class each day will be videos and small assignments, where they will keep a running journal for their answers and reflections each week. This is in line with the flipped classroom model<http://contentbuilder.merlot.org/toolkit/html/snapshot.php?id=29541695704257>. The only required book for the class is Running Lean. All other materials are provided free of charge, except for the clickers.
Each group of ten students will have one junior or senior business major hired to be their mentors. This is consistent with the “Supplemental Instruction<http://courseredesign.csuprojects.org/wp/supplemental-instruction/>” movement.
Students earn six units of credit: 3 for math and three for business. We call the course “The Digital World.” My colleague, Dr. Kent Sandoe, and I will not lecture. At the start of each 2.5 hour, we give a brief clicker “intro” quiz. Then, Kent and I will “brief” the class for 15 minutes; next hour, they will have an in-class activity (e.g., guest presenters, TedX video, debates about classical capitalism (Milton Friedman) or conscious capitalism (John Mackey), and several civic engagement exercises. In the last 45 minutes, after break, they will work exclusively on their lean canvas and take a brief “outro” clicker quiz.
At the end of the semester, Kent and I will try to help the top one or two businesses find startup funding.
I really want to say thanks to Norris, and also to Doan Wankel, for helping me understand that entrepreneurship needs to be taught by “getting out of the building” (as Ash Maurya says!). Practice trumps theory.
And like Doan, I plan to put myself in the shoes of the students and complete my own lean canvas along with the students. My basic business idea is to teach basic accounting to non-accounting students and entrepreneurs, without memorizing useless steps in a ten step cycle that requires students to memorize debits and credits.
