A Double-Embeddedness Approach

This symposium examines the effects of families upon firms - and firms upon families - summarizing and discussing results from a five-country empirical study in a forthcoming book (Firms within Families: Enterprising in Diverse Country Contexts) employing this family embeddedness perspective.  We discuss key strategic issues, such as the family's pursuit of socio-emotional wealth and its association with a firm's strategic orientations, strategies and performance. We also examine family dynamics, including the distribution of household labor, enrichment, conflict, family satisfaction, and attempts at managing the work-family interface. The research draws on  data collected from both developed and emerging economies, including the United States, Switzerland/Germany, China, Brazil and India.

Symposium organizers and participants include Kim Eddleston and Ravi Sarathy from Northeastern University; Jennifer and P. Devereaux Jennings from University of Alberta; Yangfeng Zheng of the Univ. of Hong Kong and Li Tian from Nakai University, Thomas Zellweger from the University of St. Gallen, and Maria Jose Tonelli and Tales Andreassi, Fundação Getulio Vargas from São Paulo, Brazil. The primary discussant is Pramodita Sharma, Univ. of Vermont.

Pramodita will convene the session by situating the approach vis-à-vis existing work from a family embeddedness perspective within the family business and entrepreneurship literatures. The panel of representatives from the five country teams will then discuss the theory, methods and results pertaining to family influences upon owner-managed businesses and business owner-managers within their focal setting. Time will also be allocated to a general, audience-oriented discussion around research issues such as the logistics of managing teams in different countries.
