What are the costs and benefits of pursuing research projects in non-traditional (e.g., non-profits, sports teams, governmental) research settings? Will this elevate the profile of your project, by making it "stand out"? Or will this exacerbate the already difficult paper review process? In this professional development workshop (PDW), we take a fresh look at an old problem in project design and choice: the tradeoffs in choosing to pursue a non-traditional research setting. This workshop features management scholars anchored in organization theory, but also touching upon strategy, and innovation management. Together, they discuss their views on studying a non-traditional research setting from the perspective of both authors and editors. The goal of the workshop is to promote a better understanding of the rewards and pitfalls of research in non-business settings, a project design choice that is increasingly common in management research.

    Pre-registration is not required.
