How industries emerge and the role of individuals within the industry in their emergence has long been important topics in the strategic management and entrepreneurship literatures. Entrepreneurs in emerging industries not only need to engage in strategies for their own firm, they also participate in the collective effort to gain legitimacy for the industry as a whole. The recent emergence of the cannabis industry within the U.S. presents a rare occasion for scholars to witness in real time the evolving challenges faced by entrepreneurs in a new industry. Moreover, as an industry that was completely illegal until 1996, legal only for medical purposes until 2010, and currently legal for both medical and recreational use in only four states, attempts to legitimize the industry have intensified amidst a confluence of regulatory, normative, and cognitive obstacles and uncertainties. Therefore, an exploration of the cannabis industry provides a unique opportunity to examine legitimacy building within an emerging industry in a way that goes beyond traditional boundaries of inquiry.
As one of the first two states to legalize recreational cannabis in 2010 and a state that has been used as a model for subsequent legalization efforts, Colorado is an ideal location for studying this industry. Denver, as the commercial and political center of Colorado, provides ample opportunities to explore this industry within a short period of time. Denver is home to many cannabis businesses, including those in cultivation, distribution, manufacturing, retail, and ancillary services, making it possible to examine the industry without venturing far from the conference venue.
The one day program will begin with a visit to the University of Colorado at Denver, where academic scholars and industry experts will present an overview of the industry and explain how our understanding of the industry provides insight into strategic management scholarship and practice. We will then witness the ongoing challenges of entrepreneurs within the industry first-hand through a visit to facilities at local cannabis businesses. By integrating academic and industry perspectives and combining rich discussions with first-hand observations, this conference extension aims to provide insight into legitimacy building within an emerging industry in a boundary-breaking way.
Because of logistical constraints, participation in the pre-conference extension will be limited to 50 participants.
