Colleagues, pertaining to the recent dialogue on the Entrepreneurship Division listserv, here is a call for participation in the following professional development workshop (PDW) about bridging the divide between theory and practice (with pedagogy being a means of transferring this knowledge to others):

    Crossing the Theory-Practice Chasm:
    Translating Research Results for Practitioners
    Program Session #: 160 | Submission: 13732 | Sponsor(s): (ENT, MC, RM, PTC)

    Vancouver, Canada

    Friday, August 7th, 2:45 - 4:45pm
at the Vancouver Convention Center in Room 121

    Session Description

One of the primary breakdowns in applying management research results to real-life situations is the format in which most scholarly journals present that research. Although much management research has powerful interpretive potential, it is not often articulated in ways that management practitioners can interpret or put into practice. The review process for scholarly manuscripts tends to focus on rigor of the research and theory development to ensure that they pass the test of scientific knowledge. As a result of this emphasis, the reported results of management research often fail to clarify the relevance for management practice. In the classic view of Pasteur's Quadrant, both rigor and relevance must be translated to cross the theory-practice chasm. This PDW examines a range of approaches for translating the rigorously developed results of management research into practical relevance.

The goal of this professional development workshop is to explore the divide in academia between theory and practice. Practitioner scholars, scholarly practitioners, and pure scholars will convene to surface the relevance of bridging the divide, as well as explore mechanisms to move into a regularly repeated sequence of theory informing practice, and practice informing theory - through research.

The primary discussion will be centered around the following: PRACTITIONER IN ACADEMIA and ROUTES TO PUBLICATION

Additional topics will be discussed of interest to the attendees. These discussions will take the perspective of practitioner scholars, scholarly practitioners and pure scholars.

    Agenda

    I. Initial Presentation / Discussion on the Topic (30 minutes)

This presentation / discussion activity is to frame the discussion for the rest of the workshop, and have a guided conversations to explore topics

    II.  Breakout session (45 minutes)

    A. Practitioner in academia
    B. Routes to publication
    C. To be determined (by the audience after the initial lecture/presentation)

III. Present main thoughts and solutions from the breakout session (30 minutes)

This professional development workshop captures an important and growing discussion in the academic community. Your contribution to this discussion could impact the future of meaningful research!  We look forward to seeing you at the PDW and having a lively discussion during the breakout sessions in the workshop.
