The recent attack on Krueger

I find the last outburst with - supposedly - many unsigned adherents to be quite inappropriate for this forum. I also believe that it misrepresents what Krueger means by, for example, getting paid. Moreover, forum members are unable to take what he says and adjust it for their circumstances without the need for such an attack.

Ladies and Gentlemen enough is enough, for those in the research field of 25 years or more Dr Krueger is outstanding in his ability to change thought process, question the unquestionable and make us think outside of the square, eccentric perhaps, possibly similar to the The Big Lebowski ...... love or like the 'dude' he has been a refreshing (and entertaining) in what could be a very stale research genre

    Hi all:

As a Middle Aged engineer, I am a bit weary of the argument that we were profoundly too stupid to start companies in the 1990s, and that by following the strict guidelines of a book with a motor cycle engine on the cover we will all be saved .

Fully agreed. We all have our own 'styles'. I have recently noticed that email sometimes brings out the worst in us, without anyone realizing it.  Our field would not be the same without Norris's combination of wit, knowledge, enthusiasm, and idiosyncrasies. May he always speak out!

Amen is right! Amen means so much to me

Norris, i called your delivery out. Your thoughts are always beyond what we know. I look up to you. Please keep the kids in mind.

We need peace and calm and collaboration among us. A lot of disturbing stuff is going on in the World.

Let's build it up one venture at a time.

    Thank-you, Benson

There certainly is a place for all communication styles in good pedagogy. In my experience, making extreme or provocative statements, "outlandish" claims, etc can sometimes shock students out of their complacency and free them from mental bonds of their own making. It can be thought-provoking and inspirational too.

Among professional colleagues the appropriate times for this style may be somewhat less. But it should be recognized as just a "style", and something firmly anchored in positive intentions. The use of different styles and techniques are just tools to help communicate the underlying thoughts.

On any email list we should all be trying to wisely use the most appropriate styles when we write - and to wisely listen past the particular style to the good underlying thoughts when we read.

The academic world would be a much less interesting place without Norris. We need academics who challenge what we know and what we do, especially when they do it with such passion and insight.

Those of us who have been around for a while understand that this is how knowledge is created- thesis and antithesis. You don't have to agree with Norris, but you should listen.

    Sincerely

Fully agreed. We all have our own ‘styles’. I have recently noticed that email sometimes brings out the worst in us, without anyone realizing it. Our field would not be the same without Norris’s combination of wit, knowledge, enthusiasm, and idiosyncrasies. May he always speak out!

Ladies and Gentlemen enough is enough, for those in the research field of 25 years or more Dr Krueger is outstanding in his ability to change thought process, question the unquestionable and make us think outside of the square, eccentric perhaps, possibly similar to theThe Big Lebowski …… love or like the ‘dude’ he has been a refreshing (and entertaining) in what could be a very stale research genre

I find the last outburst with - supposedly - many unsigned adherents to be quite inappropriate for this forum. I also believe that it misrepresents what Krueger means by, for example, getting paid. Moreover, forum members are unable to take what he says and adjust it for their circumstances without the need for such an attack.

Norris Kruger is one of the most insightful contributors to the intellectual capital of Entrepreneurship I have met in my 30 + years in the field. I call on Norris to keep inspiring us with his  thoughtful and challenging insights. Entrepreneurship is about getting out of one's comfort zone.  Entrepreneurship is a contact sport that requires innovative and high impact pedagogy, I very much appreciate and look forward to Norris' commentary on the multiple social media platforms in which I follow him.

Keep on bending our minds Norris.

I look forward to your continued engagement in our evolving conversations.

  • 12.  The recent attack on Krueger

    Posted 06-11-2015 16:15
    Greetings all,
It is a very long time since I last contributed to the list; I was put off by extreme criticism of one of my post. So in some way I have empathy for Norris- but of course I doubt he will be put off.

In terms of business plans, I do teach them. However I teach the deconstruction rather than the construction of such things.  I present a range of techniques and different patterns and ask for a critique of the various modes. I am not a fan of the plan.

As well as attempting to teach entrepreneurship I am also a volunteer business mentor for the local area in which I live. Most of the people I see are expecting me to come up with ways to assist them that includes a business plan. When instead I concentrate on their long term personal ambitions and suggest the business is just a vehicle to achieve this I am initially considered a 'nut job'. This quickly subsidies when the value of strategy and intent is outlined (ah ha you say - a plan). I have found that business plans per se, are very successful. However they lead to linear and dogmatic approaches to business. In terms of the academic context; a small question. How can we as teachers possibly assess the commercial value of a plan.  We can certainly assess the the academic- does it tick all the boxes - but is it a viable plan? That is up to the creator; and I don't mean god.

If they work for you as tool great.

    Happy Friday
    Andrew
