PhD Program in Management and Economics on Organizational and Institutional Outliers

The Faculty of Economics and Management at the Free University of Bozen - Bolzano encourages outstanding candidates to apply for the PhD Program in Management and Economics on Organizational and Institutional Outliers (8 positions, of which 6 positions will be covered by grants).

Our PhD program on organizational and institutional outliers deals with the uncommon, having the objective of increasing the knowledge about non-obvious factors driving success. It is focused on particular organizations and institutions that on the outset are characterized by uniqueness or liabilities that make performance a non-trivial question. Examples of potential research questions are: How can start-up companies affected by liabilities of newness and smallness compete with resource-rich large established companies? Why do certain family firms outperform capital-market driven competitors with regard to geographical and product diversification except as otherwise predicted by economic theories? Is 'holacracy' an unusual management and organizational mode or will it dominate in the future? Under which governance systems is crowd funding beneficial for all stakeholders? Almost all economic systems pursue growth strategies – under which conditions can growth-averse organizations prosper? How can atypical organizations such as cooperatives withstand competition from traditional organizations? How can smaller regions or cities reach levels of creativity comparable to large metropolitan areas? How can an unique institution such as the European Union composed of different nations with different languages and distinct but overlapping cultures develop a competitive and wealth enhancing area? What type of institutions favors the development of organizational outliers?

Moreover, we want you to bring to the table and research your own examples and ideas of outliers and successful non-conformist strategies, organizations, behavior or institutions.

The four-year, full-time PhD program, entirely taught in English is located in Bozen - Bolzano. The PhD is of cumulative nature, i.e. a collection of high-quality scholarly papers with an overriding, substantial introduction and conclusion. The first year at unibz is mainly dedicated to course work (see course program). In addition, each PhD student has a personal budget for choosing specialization courses at other institutions or events in the second year. At the end of the first year, the students need to present a proposal for the PhD project. In the second or third year, PhD students will stay usually for a period of six months abroad. The choice of the partner institution will be defined in accordance with the supervision based on the specific needs in terms of theoretical and/or methodological expertise needed to further advance the PhD project. At the end of the second year, the students will present a refined PhD proposal and a first draft of the paper. The third and fourth year consist in the completion of the PhD through the successful completion of three scholarly papers.
