  • 1.  Stockholm's startup scene

    Posted 05-28-2015 21:30

    Dear fellow students and professors,

Could anybody point me to a case study of the rise of Stockholm as a startup "hotspot"?
That is, I'd like to have a clear idea of the numbers involved, the timeline, main actors, eventual policy changes and public sector interventions, etc.

Thank you in advance and best regards,

The most referenced global entrepreneurship reports are the GEM reports
Which does include a country report on Sweden
    http://www.gemconsortium.org/country-profiles
The OECD, IMF and World Bank may have additional reports, I dont have the links handy.

Although Stockholm does not rank highly in the GEM reports, you can always find a report that does rank a particular city or country highly on some dimension
    http://www.wired.co.uk/magazine/archive/2014/09/european-startups/stockholm/viewall

The local media here in Canada is highlighting the latest GEM report where Canada ranks "second" to the US, but with all kinds of qualifiers, e.g. in industrialized countries,, G-7 countries etc.

Trying to define the "hottest" startup city, by choosing the dimensions of interest, ends up being self congratulatory exercise.

For me the more important question is which city or even country provides all citizens with opportunities for entrepreneurship,.so everyone may fulfill their potential, regardless of their background.  The centre of American entrepreneurship, Silicon fails significantly on multiple dimensions in this regard:

    http://techcrunch.com/2015/01/10/east-of-palo-altos-eden/

As one of my colleagues says "We are so focused on rising the ceiling, we are insufficiently interested in raising the floor in entrepreneurship."

    Sincerely
