This PDW is the third in the series dedicated to Family Entrepreneurship (FE) which aims to connect entrepreneurship, family business and family sciences scholars. These PDWs offer a formal setting to ask problematic questions, discuss important ideas and craft a vision of this emerging field. A tradition that the past two Family Entrepreneurship Professional Development Workshops (FE PDW) has spurred is an exchange of ideas, a sketch of a research agenda and identification of pertinent research designs borne from discussion concerning questions raised in the sessions.
Our goal in 2015 edition is to encourage high quality research on FE by providing mentoring to doctoral students, junior faculty or seasoned scholars from parent disciplines (family sciences, entrepreneurship, family business), or other disciplines (organizational behavior, HRM, strategic management) interested in this quickly developing research field (Bettinelli et al, 2014). Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their current research and to receive detailed feedback in a supportive environment with senior scholars.
In order to maximize learning and exchange, participants will be required to make a written submission so that their work can be reviewed and discussed in detail. In order to open this workshop up to as many scholars as possible, we will invite two different streams of submissions: 1) 'early stage' proposals outlining planned research (4-5 pages); and 2) 'mid to late' papers reporting on completed research (25-30 pages).
The workshop will begin with a presentation delivered by Lloyd Steier, who will provide an overview of the domain and suggestion for improving the quality of Family Entrepreneurship research in general. Following this, the workshop will move into roundtable format so that senior scholars and authors of accepted works can provide detailed feedback on submitted proposals and papers. The focus will be on helping participants strengthen their theoretical and empirical contributions, so that their work has a higher chance of being published within top-tier journals. A special issue of the Journal of Family Business Strategy will be dedicated to this topic. A time informal networking has also been planned. This session will provide an excellent opportunity for students and junior scholars to develop their research, gain new skills and insights, and build professional contacts with peers and senior scholars in the field.
Senior scholars who have accepted to participate include: Howard Aldrich, Francesco Chirico, Kim Eddleston, Richard Harrison, Frank Hoy, Jennifer Jennings, Franz Kellermans, G. Thomas Lumpkin, Don Neubaum, Torsten Pieper, Pramodita Sharma, Alex Stewart, Lorraine Uhlaner, Friederike Welter, Shaker A. Zahra, and Thomas Zellweger.
Participation in this PDW is limited. Please send your proposal or paper and an overview outlining any questions or specific concerns they are hoping to receive feedback on to Esra Memili (
e_memili@uncg.edu) before June 15th. If your work is selected, you will receive an invitation to participate starting from July 8th.
