While open innovation research has primarily focused on inbound knowledge flows (i.e. bringing in knowledge from outside the firm), the other side of the coin is at least equally important. Corporate spin-offs can serve as a powerful tool not only for restructuring, but they also facilitate the development of new (technological) knowledge. While the, often rigid, structures of existing corporations may hinder the development of new ventures, placing them outside of the corporation may actually enhance their possibilities for further growth and development. Despite the apparent importance of the topic, research in this area is scarce and at best scattered among different research areas, such as finance, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The aim of this PDW is to bring together scholars that have an (active) interest in the topic of corporate spin-offs with the intent to facilitate knowledge sharing and creation and the identification of new research areas in this field. The panelists/facilitators can be considered a representative selection of world-known experts in the area of corporate spin- offs and corporate restructuring representing a broad range of research approaches and perspectives on the topic.
The first part [Registration NOT required] features presentations of state-of-the-art-research on corporate spin-offs by our invited panelists. We offer a panel discussion and Q&A session. This session goes from 3:30-4:45pm.
In the second part [Registration Required] (5-6pm), we split up in smaller subgroups in order to facilitate an intensive workshop on three tables with the following topics: different theoretical approaches to corporate spin-offs, exit dynamics of corporate spin-offs, measurement and methodological issues in corporate spin-off research.
Pre-registration is required for Part Two of this workshop. To register online, please visit https://secure.aom.org/PDWReg. Please contact the workshop organizer(s) to obtain the approval code. The deadline to register is July 30, 2014.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
