any of you have developed or know of such a course and are willing to
share, I would love to hear from you. I am especially interested in
    sample syllabi, resources, and exercises.

Very cool! Belmont has something like this - Jeff Cornwall is worth pinging.(I will cc him).

A good case study that hasn't made into print AFAIK is Harry Connick taking the lead in helping post-Katrina. What I remember was a supposed quote "Harry, how were you able to organize in all this madness? answer... "Man, have you ever run a BAND?" LOL but as an old trumpet player.. Harry is right. (Bill Schulte knew the story better but alas he's gone, dammit.)

    Anyway, keep us all posted!

    Hi!

An introductory course on Entrepreneurship for the students of Music
    may cover the following:

    a. History of music/Musicians tracing their penchant for music &
    musical instruments;

    b. Modern trends in Music Industry: Singers; Dancers; Composers;
Choreographers; (Eg: How some of the musical bands made it so big!
Shall we count the Backstreet Boys/Spice Girls/Michael Jackson/Enrique
    as musical entrepreneurs?

    c. Musical entrepreneurship and Innovation: Creation of new
song/dance/musical instruments/music genres. (Eg: The latest which
comes to my mind is Gangnam!)

    d. Music and business: Teaching/Mentoring and making money; Combining
    music and other fields (gymnasium/aerobics)

    e. Music entrepreneurship and geographies: In different geo-contexts!

Case studies could be drafted further on the aforementioned lines,
and, of, course, there are many more angles to teaching the Musical
    Entrepreneurship course.

    Best regards,

    Stuti.

PS: I am excited to know about pedagogy for the course. Prof.
Sapienza, please share the final course outline, if possible.

    Dear Harry,

I used to run a workshop called How to earn a living as an artist.

The basic idea is that there are few jobs so you have to be entrepreneurial.

I talked about the attitudes, skills, and resources you need to start a business.

One central question was this: Do you do art for your living or do you live to do your art? Those who do art for their living want to produce for the market. Some other artists want to do their art their own way and do not want to produce for a market. It usually helps to make this decision early in the process.

Unfortunately that was so long ago that I don't have any materials left but happy to share.

Are you going to be at the Academy conference in Orlando?

    Cheers,

    Hi Harry,

I use in general courses a Harvard case about Allison Brown and Compass Records, a musician who started her own record label.  It is a good case for introducing the multiple streams of income that a musician can earn.  With appropriate adaptations, it can fit other skilled practitioners.  It is also good for transmitting that there is a difference between being good at something and making money at something.  There are structural reasons why the first does not always lead to the second.

    Hope this helps, and

    Enjoy the course!

    Harry,

This may be a bit off the wall, but I recommend including a very
interesting piece written in The Economist (2011) about Albrecht Durer
entitled "Albrecht Durer: A Portrait of the Artist as an Entrepreneur". I
know this is not Renaissance Europe and your focus in music rather than
art, but I think Durer's business practices as compared to his
contemporaries may give your students some insight about what it takes to
make a living in the arts. I think his business model compares favorably
to 21st century artists' (and musicians) use of social media as a means to
get closer to the (paying) customer. At a minimum, it will give them an
interesting historical perspective. Below is the link to the article:

    http://www.economist.com/node/21541710

    Hope this helps. Best,
    Peter

  • 8.  Intro. to Entrepreneurship for Music Majors

    Hi Harry,

I use the following short (6-page) case about a dedicated music website (MusicJuice) that enables musicians to raise money from their fans and the community of interested users in a crowdsourced manner:

    MusicJuice.net:
    https://www.iveycases.com/ProductBrowse.aspx?q=music%20juice&em=0#fs~!ipp~5!q~musicjuice.net!v~0!sd~1!vbc~0!vac~1!vnc~0!em~0!so~1!pn~0!hs~1!mp~0!bis~

While a seemingly good business idea in principle (the teaching note, also available from Ivey Publishing, cites such an idea as a potential source of Schumpeterian creative destruction in the music industry), in practice it illustrates several practical problems with starting an Internet-based venture - and challenges the students to think of ways to solve them when there is little or no cash flow available to the entrepreneurs.

    Regards, Simon

I am trying to develop an intro to e'ship course for music students. If any of you have developed or know of such a course and are willing to share, I would love to hear from you. I am especially interested in sample syllabi, resources, and exercises.

    Thank you,
    Harry
