Abstract:
The purpose of this professional development workshop is to identify and explore theoretical and practical issues related to strategic human capital and to arm workshop participants with promising directions for high-quality research opportunities in this domain. Recent interest in the "microfoundations" of strategic management has focused attention on the role of individuals whose extraordinary skills and productivity make them potential sources of competitive advantage – strategic human capital. The construct of strategic human capital presents new opportunities to researchers in strategic human resource management, organizational behavior, employee mobility and turnover, and executive compensation, as well as to scholars exploring multi-level constructs of strategic management. In addition, unlike other strategically valuable firm assets, strategic human capital may behave in ways that are incongruent or even in direct conflict with the goals of the firm's owners and managers. The ability to generate economic profits and appropriate them is closely related to those individuals who comprise a firm's strategic human capital, raising questions such as "For whom is value created?" Because the study of strategic human capital is a relatively new area of inquiry covering multiple domains of management topics, such as strategic management, human resources management, and organizational behavior, and offers new theoretical insights, this workshop seeks to engage both seasoned researchers who have been focusing on one of these domains individually and "newcomers" who want to begin a research agenda in this exciting multi-disciplinary topic.
