PDW: “Single” and “Multiple” Entrepreneurial Opportunities: Initiating a Dialogue (Session #314)
Saturday, August 10th, 13h00 to 15h00, at Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Swan 4
Sponsors: ENT, BPS, TIM
Organisers: Marc Gruber, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne; Susan Hill, London School of Economics
Participants: Julian Birkinshaw, London Business School; Ian MacMillan, The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania; Gina O’Connor, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Shaker Zahra, University of Minnesota
Although empirical research shows that individuals or teams may simultaneously recognize, evaluate and act on multiple opportunities, our understanding of this phenomenon and its fundamental implications for the entrepreneurial process is embryonic. This is largely because much research has implicitly assumed that an individual or team, whether in an independent or corporate entrepreneurial setting, recognizes and decides whether to act on a single opportunity at any given time. A “multiple” opportunity perspective may, however, add valuable new insights to our understanding of both opportunity recognition and exploitation processes, and entrepreneurial outcomes.
This multi-disciplinary PDW invites all scholars and practitioners with an interest in business opportunities. We intend to take stock of an emerging body of theory and empirical research investigating the identification of multiple opportunities and to develop an agenda to guide future research efforts in this direction. Towards that end, the PDW will begin with panel presentations by leading academics from diverse research backgrounds (entrepreneurship, innovation, strategy etc.) to reflect critically on the implications of a multiple opportunity approach in their work. This will be followed by roundtable discussions between panellists and members of the audience to develop the contours of a richer agenda for future research on business opportunities.
Apologies for cross-postings.
