We wanted to let you all know of the exciting conference & PDW organized by the Network of Leadership Scholars (NLS). The conference & PDW will be held at Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort on August 8^th (beginning at 3 PM with a panel discussion) and August 9^th (ending at 3 PM as an Academy PDW). Conference Theme for 2013

In line with the Academy Theme of Capitalism in Question, our conference and PDW focuses our attention on "Homelessness & Cross-Sectoral Collaboration." Like other great societal challenges such as HIV/AIDS and environmental injustice, homelessness cannot be solved through efforts of one sector (business, nonprofits, government, media, or community) alone. With participation from multiple stakeholder groups including organizations from Central Florida, we seek to engage scholars and practitioners to address this vexing social problem. Consequently, we welcome scholars and practitioners from all disciplines and interests to participate in this event.

The conference outcome is identification of a set of knowledge products that, if produced, would help significantly advance understanding of the role of leadership in building sustainable cross-sectoral collaborations to address messy problems (in this particular case, homelessness).

Format

What's particularly unique (and exciting!) about the conference & PDW is the format.  There are no paper presentations- this is not an "Academy before the Academy."  Instead participants (scholars and practitioners) will engage in the design thinking process around the challenge chosen. The design thinking process has been developed specific to the needs of our conference, and will be led by a professional facilitator, Drew Marshall, who has volunteered his services for this effort. Participants in the first two NLS events indicate that the format of the event engages participants in stimulating conversations around issues of considerable social import.

Event Details

The conference & PDW starts on August 8^th afternoon with a moderated panel discussion on the challenge addressed by this conference. Several field/non-governmental organizations from both Central Florida as well as other regions will be represented at the conference and will be providing rich case studies of successful and not-so successful initiatives targeted at alleviating homelessness to serve as data for the design challenge. The conference registration fees of $25 will be used to meet expenses associated with hosting this conference not covered by either the Academy or external funding.
