Colleagues,
I am assisting in the development of a new undergraduate course to be
offered at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada. The
course, which is tentatively titled "Student Venture Fund,"aims to provide
students with the real life opportunity to learn the theory and practice of
financing companies, with actual funds, in the start-up stage of the company
life cycle. It is an advanced level course that will be offered in
conjunction with related courses, including entrepreneurial finance, deal
sourcing, and due diligence, among others.
The program combines academic concepts and real life investment experience
to produce a solid learning opportunity by having students source deals,
conduct due diligence and make seed capital investment in start-up companies
in the province of New Brunswick. At the end of the course, students should
be able to: Identify opportunity for investments in start-up companies based
on specific criteria; know the various steps of the financing process for
start-ups; understand how to conduct due diligence to identify "investable"
companies; be employable in the private equity industry; prepare for the
industry recognized CAIA designation.
I am seeking advice from members of this listserv about best practices for
successfully developing and delivering this course. Specifically, I would
like to hear from those of you who might have developed a similar course
(particularly ones that use real funds) at your own institutions.
Please send me any information that you are willing to share (especially
course outlines!) to
jmcnall1@gmail.com. I am happy to compile the
information and share it with this listserv at a later date.
Regards,
Jeff
