Colleagues, please join us for an exciting PDW on entrepreneurship and economic freedom, part of a broader initiative to explore the institutional foundations of entrepreneurial activity. Details are below. We hope to see you there!  -- Peter Klein

Entrepreneurship and Economic Freedom: Establishing a Research Agenda

Friday, August 9, 10am-12pm, WDW Swan Resort in Swan 9

    Moderator: Steve Bradley (Baylor University)

Presenters: Nicolai Foss (Copenhagen Business School), Peter Klein (University of Missouri), Jeff McMullen (Indiana University), Karl Wennberg (Stockholm School of Economics)

Net job growth in the United States and European economies has historically been driven by small, entrepreneurial firms. While it is recognized that many entrants do not survive long after founding, recent trends suggest there is now a declining number of new firms attempting to take their place in the market. In contrast, other developing countries are experiencing a rapid rise in net entrepreneurial activity. These rapidly shifting trends, while not unnoticed by the entrepreneurship field, remain relatively absent from our current theory, analysis and teaching. Entrepreneurship research and education have emphasized the entrepreneur, opportunities, resources and competitive environment in which business entry occurs with the assumption that relatively unhindered markets exist. Increasingly, political institutions play an influential role in many industries, both attempting to promote as well as potentially hinder business initiation. A greater understanding and awareness of how these institutional forces alter the motives, processes and outcomes for opportunities, business initiation, and growth is needed. This PDW will consist of two parts. The first part will have panelists present overviews of exemplar work on the topic. The second part will be used as a "white board" time with audience participation to discuss theory, data and research topics that are underexplored to date. The collected knowledge from the discussion will be provided to workshop participants. The main goals of this PDW are to: 1) identify new research ideas at different levels of analysis and 2) provide a contact point for collaboration for researchers interested in entrepreneurship and economic freedom.
