Apologies for cross-postings:
PDWs from the Ethics Education Committee for AOM 2013
Do you want to conduct online research in an ethical manner? Do you navigate ethical and political issues involved in publishing your research in scholarly journals? Mark your calendar for two lively PDWs and an important forum offered by the AOM Ethics Education Committee!
· Ethical e-Research: Designing Qualitative and Quantitative Studies
in a Digital World Program Session #: 170 | Submission: 14096 | Sponsor(s): (RM, OCIS)
Scheduled: Friday, Aug 9 2013 5:00PM - 7:00PM at WDW Coronado Springs Resort in Acapulco. Coordinator: Janet E. Salmons, Capella U.;
Presenters: Benson Honig, McMaster U.; Paul Louis Drnevich, The U. of Alabama; and Janet E. Salmons, Capella U.
· Ethical research involves making decisions that are rather subtle and not clearly codified. As scholarship increasingly becomes a global activity, and as scholars begin to utilize new methods of digital data collection, tacit dimensions of ethical research may be overlooked, particularly with methods not covered in conventional doctoral education. This PDW aims to address some of these gaps. This workshop will explore emerging research dilemmas and current thinking about ethical online research practices.
· The Ethics and Politics of Publishing in Research Journals: Program Session #: 200 | Submission: 15743 | Sponsor(s): (BPS, IM, RM)
Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 10 2013 8:00AM - 10:00AM at WDW Swan Resort in Swan 5. Organizers: Roberto Gamarra, Lewis U.; Joseph Lampel, City U. London; Kathleen Montgomery, U. of California, Riverside; and Janet E. Salmons; Capella U.
Discussants: Samuel Aryee; King's College London; Benson Honig, McMaster U.; Tim Pollock, Pennsylvania State U.; Claudia Bird Schoonhoven; U. of California, Irvine; and Robyn Thomas, Cardiff U.
· Recent incidents of research malpractice in management research have again brought to the fore the importance of ethics in research and publishing. Although one can point to a variety of publications where research and publishing ethics are discussed, this body of knowledge is overwhelmingly normative in orientation. Ethics, however, cannot be separated from the pressures and problems that researchers face when writing and revising their manuscripts to journals. During the research and publishing process, researchers often face ethical dilemmas that arise as a result of tensions between normative principles and the realities of research and publishing in a field that is intensely competitive. The purpose of this PDW is to focus on the publication stages of the research process.
