Research in Microfinance
As the literature on microfinance continues to accumulate, there is a growing need to offer an ontological perspective of the phenomenon. Unlike corporate finance or venture capital, where access to financial resources goes to those projects promising the highest returns, microfinance can be viewed as a tool for achieving economic and social development goals. As such, the theoretical perspectives and empirical tools to investigate microfinance are likely to depart from those used in corporate finance and venture capital. To support their respective missions, the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and the New York University Stern Business and Society Program are pleased to invite contributions for a volume provisionally titled, Theory and Evidence in Microfinance, to be published by Imperial College Press in 2013.
Edited by Professors Phillip Phan and Jill Kickul, this volume seeks to publish the latest theoretical and empirical research on the political economy of microfinance, the sources and uses of microfinance instruments, the conflicts and complementarities between non-market players such as government and non-profit foundations, the organizational forms of microfinance institutions and their relationships with market and non-market players, and performance measurement of microfinance institutions. We are particularly interested in papers that attempt to generalize theory from multiple case studies and discussions about the future of research in this phenomenon.
Inquires should be sent to Phillip Phan (pphan@jhu.edu) or Jill Kickul (jkickul@stern.nyu.edu). Dateline for competitive submissions is Dec 1, 2012. Initial reviews will be provided by Jan 1, 2013. The volume will be published in late 2013.
