rating entrepreneurship journals

Journal ratings and rankings are problematic in our field, we (John Cotton and I) argue in a paper called "Making sense of entrepreneurship journals: Journal rankings and strategy choices".  It's forthcoming in the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Research.  The text can be found if you Google the title.  We rate 59 journals but with many qualifications about the universal use of our approach or any other approach.

We raise six questions: (1) can you resist rating journals (we say that despite reasons to try, you can't); (2) how inclusive or exclusive should the list be? (we say it should be open to cross-disciplinary work); (3) what methods should be used? (we compare the strengths and limitations of surveys versus citations, settling on citations for our study, noting the new approaches from Scopus and Google Scholar); (4) how can you set cut-points (arguing that these are never definitive but showing the bases for our judgments); (5) what level should count for merit? (here we offer four defenses of "B" journals; later we suggest that even "lower" journals may be suitable in some situations); and (6) can ratings match your business school's strategy? (suggesting that this is the toughest challenge of all).  Hopefully this paper will be helpful for our colleagues, not only in providing current information but in laying out the range of judgments that must be made, explicitly or otherwise.

In addition to Alex's forthcoming article, I would highly recommend reading Bill Starbuck's paper "How much better are the most prestigious journals? The statistics of Academic publication" 2005: Organization Science, vol 16 (2):180-200.

My university finds that Starbuck list "weak" and did not use it in determining our list.  I hope new evidence arises as to journal impacts. My school almost entirely rests upon top tier school lists.

I've surveyed MGT department heads on how they view the prestige of a large number of ENT outlets as it plays out in their Dept's promotion and tenure process. Trying to ferret out some of the relative differences between outlets. Only SEJ rated amongst the general management journals (ASQ, AMJ, AMR, OrgSci, & JOM), JBV and ET&P were perceived by P&T committees to be in a tier below the other journals. Most other ENT journals were perceived to be in a third tier. These surveys were limited to U.S. Ph.D. granting Management Departments.

Again this is only how Department Heads perceive their respective P&T committees treating the respective publications. Cheers, David.

    Dear Entrepreneurship Community,

I have conducted a survey over the last couple of years on P&T committees' perceptions of JBV.  Many consider JBV as a top tier publication and I thought you might be interested in this list of schools given David's post.  If you have any information for updating the list please email me.

In addition to Alex's forthcoming article, I would highly recommend reading Bill Starbuck's paper "How much better are the most prestigious journals? The statistics of Academic publication" 2005: Organization Science, vol 16 (2):180-200.

We raise six questions: (1) can you resist rating journals (we say that despite reasons to try, you can't); (2) how inclusive or exclusive should the list be? (here we offer four defenses of "B" journals; later we suggest that even "lower" journals may be suitable in some situations); and (6) can ratings match your business school's strategy?

    Colleagues,

I published a study about five years ago that evaluated the research records of faculty who earned tenure in the field of entrepreneurship (I can send that to you if you want a copy...please e-mail me at finklet2000@yahoo.com).

Ivy league schools did not tend to rate our journals high. However, almost everyone else pretty much rated ET&P and JBV as solid A Hits. JSBM back then was not as strong and was rated a B Hit, but some 50/50 and teaching schools rated it as an A hit as well!! However, JSBM has gotten stronger as of late.

Being in the field for 20 years and fought for legitimacy of entrepreneurship research at three different schools (Ph.D., 60/40, and teaching), I have the opinion that the value of research is dependent on the school's mission. Furthermore, I remember as a doctoral student, I talked with Ian MacMillan about research.  He told me that irrespective of rankings and citations, one has to look at the content of the research and its overall contribution to the field. That has stuck with me for over 20 years!!
