  • 1.  Basic Reference for Ethnographic Research

    Greetings!

I have a couple of honors undergraduate students who will be doing some observational research for the first time. I'd love to give them some basic references for ethnographic research and qualititative methods. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Sincerely,
    Lois

    Hi Lois,

You could direct your students towards the Journal of Organizational Ethnography. It's a new journal, with only two issues published so far. I don't believe it's covered much on methodology yet but it is certainly a journal to keep an eye on.

It is currently free to access until 1st October 2012. To access the content simply visit the table of contents page.

Hope it can be of value to you and your students.

    Best wishes,

    Kieran

    HI Lois,

A good book devoted to the how-to of ethnography is "Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes" by Robert Emerson, Rachel Fretz and Linda Shaw (University of Chicago Press, 1995).  A good primer for qualitative research design is "Qualitative Research Design: An Interactive Approach" by Joseph Maxwell (Sage, 1996).  Both of these books are relatively simple texts that would be appropriate for honors undergraduate students.  I would not be surprised if more recent editions have been published; nonetheless, these are good sources.

Additionally, you may wish to refer them to one of the premier references for qualitative research: "Qualitative Data Analysis: An Expanded Sourcebook" by Matthew Miles and Michael Huberman (Sage, 1994).  This text is much more expansive and extensive; nonetheless, they (or you) may want to have access to this book to address any additional questions that the other two books do not cover.

    Hope this helps.
    Laquita
