In recent years, innovation ecosystems led by companies such as Apple, Google, and Salesforce.com have opened a vast range of opportunities for entrepreneurs in the technology sector and beyond. Entrepreneurship in such an iPhone economy involves a unique set of managerial issues and challenges as it requires entrepreneurs to innovate and work within the goals and structures set forth by the dominant firm (ecosystem leader), and at the same time, ensure the new ventures continued growth and relevance in the broader market. The objective of this symposium is to identify and explore the important research issues associated with pursuing entrepreneurship in innovation ecosystems. We will discuss and debate a wide range of related issues including the identification of entrepreneurial opportunities in innovation ecosystems; new venture strategies related to value creation/value appropriation and collaboration/competition; entrepreneurs' capabilities and skills to enhance new venture success in innovation ecosystems; and the role of new ventures in shaping the growth and evolution of innovation ecosystems. Given the broad nature of the phenomenon, the panelists will draw on theories and concepts from different management disciplines including entrepreneurship, technology and innovation management, strategy, and behavioral science. The symposium is expected to generate new ideas and thinking at the intersection of entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystems and broaden our understanding of this relatively nascent phenomenon. The expected key outcomes are: (a) a more coherent and multidisciplinary view of entrepreneurship in innovation ecosystems; (b) a deeper understanding of the key issues related to managing a new venture within the confines of a dominant firm's innovation platform; and, (c) the identification of the important directions for future research in this area.
