Job Description
Purpose
The Executive Director of the Samuel Zell and Robert H. Lurie Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies (ZLI) is an important contributor to all aspects of the fulfillment of the Institute's mission, core values and growth plans.
The Executive Director is responsible for stewarding ZLI's comprehensive entrepreneurship efforts including the development of curricular and co-curricular programs; encouragement of innovative research and administration of research funds; distribution of scholarships; outreach to the school, university, community , and alumni; administration of competitions, awards, conferences and other large-scale activities; and oversight of public relations and marketing efforts, in collaboration with the School's marketing function. The Executive Director also supports donor relations, cultivation, gift solicitation and stewardship and serves as the principal liaison to the ZLI Advisory Board.
This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Faculty and Research of the Ross School of Business and oversees a staff of approximately six.
This position will be filled as either a faculty or staff position depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Duties and Responsibilities
Curriculum Development and Faculty Recruiting
Working collaboratively with the faculty, develop and implement a comprehensive program of entrepreneurship education, for both graduate and undergraduate students,for the Ross School of Business.
> Oversee quality of current graduate and undergraduate entrepreneurship courses. Regularly review Ross School entrepreneurship curricula for quality and coherence.
> Provide significant support to encourage new course development and an increase in undergraduate and graduate entrepreneurship-related studies. Communicate opportunities for undergraduate and graduate studies in entrepreneurship.
> Create Entrepreneurial Studies (ES) designed courses not offered by area groups to insure richness of curriculum (i.e. Entrepreneurship through Acquisition; Wolverine Venture Fund; Social Venture Fund; Growing the Entrepreneurial Enterprise; Marketing for Entrepreneurs).
> Act as main fiduciary agent responsible for the Wolverine Venture Fund and the Social Venture Fund. Provide valuation of holding to University Financial Operations on a regular basis. Provide support for the Frankel Fund.
> Recruit adjunct and clinical faculty to staff ES courses. Assist with finding faculty to support the Master in Entrepreneurship program.
Co-Curricular Programming
Stay abreast of emerging trends, research, student interests, resources and donor prospects to identify opportunities for co-curricular innovation; evaluate feasibility of new programming, and; direct and oversee implementation.
> In partnership with Ross faculty, staff and students, plan and implement events, competitions and awards (e.g., "Dare to Dream," the Michigan Business Challenge, and ZLI scholarship awards).
> Oversee the implementation of all events and conferences. Current examples include Entrepalooza, Michigan Growth Capital Symposium, and Private Equity Conference.
> Ensure appropriate coaching is provided for teams of entrepreneurial students who start businesses within Ross/ZLI (e.g., TechArb Student Accelerator). Act as coach where appropriate.
Outreach
Build strong and mutually beneficial relationships between Ross academic leadership, faculty, and staff; University leadership, faculty, and staff; and external audiences such as donors, alumni, business and community leaders, and other entrepreneurial centers in the State of Michigan.
> Foster partnerships and align objectives with other schools and colleges on campus. Represent ZLI, Ross, and where appropriate, the University of Michigan within network of leading business schools and peer institutions.
> Represent ZLI and Ross on campus committees and boards (e.g., Vice President for Research's Campus-Wide Committee on Entrepreneurship, Medial Innovation Center Advisory Board, College of Engineering's Center for Entrepreneurship Advisory Board, and the Entrepreneurial Leaders Forum) and provide council to other entrepreneurial efforts and programs (e.g., Law School ZEAL Program).
> Represent ZLI and Ross in the media, in collaboration with the Ross School's media relations function.
Research
Working with the Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, promote, communicate, and support an increase in entrepreneurship-related research. Facilitate interaction between practitioners and scholars in the entrepreneurship space. Provide research funding to Ph.D. students and faculty doing research in entrepreneurship. Provide funding for monographs and case writing to faculty and students. Coordinate with tenure-track faculty to provide occasional conferences and seminars in entrepreneurship.
Management
Select, supervise, develop and evaluate assigned staff; establish and model performance expectations and standards to foster a positive and innovative culture. Provide leadership for the training and motivation of staff in order to make full use of individual capabilities and to meet ZLI's growth and demands. Manage the development and maintenance of the unit's operating budget. Coordinate with other Centers and Institutes to support interdisciplinary initiatives, foster operating efficiencies and share/implement best practices.
Donor Relations
Build and steward internal and external relationships with key individuals and organizations to determine how they can best partner with the Institute. In partnership with Ross Development, identify, establish, and cultivate relationships with national and international organizations, alumni, and potential donors to promote the initiatives of ZLI. Provide stewardship for gifts to ZLI. Serve as principal liaison to the ZLI Advisory Board.
Department Qualifications:
Education – Faculty Candidate
Doctoral degree in appropriate field is necessary
Experience/Special Knowledge/Skills – Faculty Candidate
> National recognition as an academic leader in a discipline related to entrepreneurial studies.
> Demonstrated ability to promote research and educational collaboration across diverse disciplines
> Administrative experience, including the ability to develop new funding opportunities
> Demonstrated ability to forge effective relationships among the Institute's constituencies, including academic, industry, non-governmental organizations, and governmental agencies
> Fundraising experience is preferred
> Domestic and/or international travel may be required
