2012 Academy of Management Conference Boston
The BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop is offered as a pre-conference activity for doctoral students in strategy at the 2012 Academy of Management Meeting in Boston.
The workshop is open to all doctoral students. The workshop offers practical advice to advanced doctoral students on completing their dissertations and transitioning to their first academic positions. Pre-registration from students is required.
The workshop will be conducted in an informal setting where students will be able to interact with faculty and other students in small groups. The finalists for last year's BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award share the coordination of the workshop. These finalists are: Giada DiStefano (HEC Paris), Markus Fitza (Bentley University), Martin Ganco (University of Minnesota), Yujin Jeong (American University), Chris Liu (University of Toronto), Elena Novelli (University of Bath).
In addition, several senior faculty members (the finalists' advisors/committee members) will discuss their perspectives on outstanding dissertation research. The format of the PDW will mix plenary presentations by senior faculty followed by Q&A's, and breakout discussion groups led by last year's finalists for the BPS Outstanding Dissertation Award.
The following faculty members have agreed to participate in the workshop: Rajshree Agarwal (University of Maryland), Gautam Ahuja (University of Michigan), Alfonso Gambardella (Bocconi University), Andy King (Dartmouth), and Sharon Matusik (University of Colorado Boulder).
If you are a doctoral student in strategy, you are encouraged to attend. Small group discussion will allow for interaction of people at similar stages. Topics to be covered include: (a) managing a dissertation committee, (b) considerations on research design, (c) practical and technical issues associated with data collection, (d) seeking a job and preparing the job talk, (e) writing and defending the dissertation, and (f) carving up the dissertation into papers for publication.
Doctoral students interested in the workshop should pre-register at
http://secure.aomonline.org/PDWReg. The deadline to pre-register is August 1, 2012. In addition, please submit a brief summary of your dissertation research interests to Martin Ganco at
mganco@umn.edu with the phrase "BPS Managing Your Dissertation Workshop" in the title of the email.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
