2012 Academy of Management Annual Meeting - August 3-7, 2012 – Boston, Massachusetts
Professional Development Workshop
Gender Perspectives to Innovation: Developing a Research Agenda
Sponsored by the Entrepreneurship Division
August 3rd at 3.45 PM until 6.15 PM (15.45 until 18.15 hrs) at Sheraton Boston Hotel
While gender perspectives have been applied to business start-ups, ownership, financing and performance, there has been little discussion on the role of gender in relation to issues such as corporate entrepreneurship and innovation. We still lack fundamental knowledge about the role of gender and gendered practices within the context of innovation and innovative firms. As innovation is perceived to be a tool to create economic growth and wealth for firms, regions and nations, this is an important deficient in our knowledge base. Moreover, innovation research has excluded women by focusing on industries that men dominate both as business owners and as employees (Blake and Hanson, 2005) and commonly used measures of innovation indirectly accentuate men. The purpose of this PDW is to put the focus on gender perspectives to innovation as an area of further research. By gathering scholars with interest into this area in an interactive session to discuss important research questions, concepts, theoretical foundations and potential empirical methods, we seek to contribute to building the foundations for future research on gender and innovation. The PDW will encourage more research on the gender perspectives to innovation and to develop a research network within the area.
An interactive section will be created, starting with key note speeches by Professor Susan Marlow and Senior Researcher Elisabet Ljunggren, and followed by round table discussions using an inclusive interactive method. This method will be used to facilitate discussions and to bring forward ideas and important issues, as well as potential methods to study gender issues in relation to innovation. The PWD should give input to the building of a research agenda of gender and innovation.
The following examples of potential issues may give some initial ideas of the research needs:
• innovation processes and practices and the role of gender and gender equality
• access to resources needed for innovation from a gendered perspective
• the role of gender in academic and corporate spin-offs
• participation in innovation processes within and between firms from a gendered perspective
• gendered understandings of knowledge and how knowledge is used in innovation processes
• innovation in e.g. personal services and public sector organizations and the role of gender
• the relation between the lack of women in top management and board positions, innovation, growth and the gender segregated labor market
• gendered aspects of public policies and support schemes directed towards innovation and growth
The PDW require pre-registration. Please register no later than August 1st at the AOM website: http://program.aomonline.org/2012/Session_Details.asp?print=true&SubmissionID=15633. If you are not yet an Academy of Management member you can register here: http://login.aomonline.org/aom.asp
