Academy of Management PDW -  Being a Department Chair: Learning from Others

Professor Margarethe Wiersema (University of California, Irvine), Dean Chuck Williams (Butler College of Business), and Professor Charles R. (Bob) Greer (Texas Christian University) will co-chair a PDW session on Being a Department Chair: Learning from Others.  This professional development workshop is designed for those who currently serve as department chairs or are incoming chairs. The purpose of the professional development workshop is to discuss key issues that confront department chairs and to share experiences with other chairs.  The PDW will run from 1:00 – 4:30 pm on Friday, August 3, 2012.  It will begin with a plenary session, followed by breakout sessions, which allow for opportunity to socialize with other department chairs.  The plenary includes five department chairs from various institutions who will highlight the key challenges and issues that department chairs face today. These chairs include the following:  Steve Barr (North Carolina State University), Greg Dess (University of Texas Dallas), Irene M. Duhaime (Georgia State University), Jim Jawahar (Illinois State University), and Annette Ranft (University of Tennessee).  The breakout sessions will focus on the following topics: Evaluating and Mentoring Faculty on Research and Teaching; Low Performing Faculty; Clinical and Academic Faculty Recruiting; Course Development, Scheduling, and Staffing; Managing Relations across the Business School; and Managing Time and Conflict.  Please register for this pre-conference by using the Academy's registration system before the July 15^th, 2012 deadline.  The session and link to the registration system may be found in the program at the following link: http://program.aomonline.org/2012/Session_Details.asp?print=true&SubmissionID=18390

Professor Charles R. (Bob) Greer (Texas Christian University), Dean Chuck Williams (Butler College of Business), and Professor Sharon Oswald (Mississippi State University) will co-chair a PDW session on Being a Department Chair: Learning from Others.  The PDW will run from 12:30 – 4:30 pm on Friday, August 9, 2013.  It will begin with a plenary session highlighting the key challenges and issues that department chairs face today.  The plenary session speakers will be Tom Cummings, University of Southern California, and Steve Barr, North Carolina State University.  Breakout sessions will focus on the following topics: (1) Evaluating and Mentoring Faculty on Research, (2) Evaluating and Mentoring Faculty on Teaching, (3) Low Performing Faculty, (4) Faculty Recruiting (tenure track, clinical, and adjunct), and (5) Managing Time and Conflict. The topic chairs for the breakout sessions are Tim Barnett (Mississippi State University), Pam Barr (Georgia State University), Steve Barr (North Carolina State University), Tom Cummings (University of Southern California), Hettie Richardson (Louisiana State University/Texas Christian University), and Jim Jawahar (Illinois State University). Each of the Breakout Sessions will be conducted by one or two topic chairs: the three PDW co-chairs, and the plenary speakers.  Participants for this workshop should be department chairs or incoming department chairs.
