    Friends:

As you finalize your Academy plans we want to inform you that the Second Annual Research/Practice conference organized by the Network of Leadership Scholars is developing into an exciting event. Here are the details:

AUGUST 1st & 2nd, 2012 at Northeastern University, Boston, MA

The Second Research/Practice Conference on "Leadership in the Informal Economy: Addressing Challenges from the Field"

You can find more information about the conference (and the Network of Leadership Scholars) on our web site (http://nls.aomonline.org/) and in the text below.

As you know, the Network of Leadership Scholars was founded in 2005 to provide an interdisciplinary forum for leadership scholars of various disciplines, perspectives and nationalities to share ideas and knowledge for the advancement of leadership research and practice. Our network currently has approximately 1,000 members from all over the world, and draws more broadly from multiple divisions of the Academy of Management.

Based on feedback from the participants of our inaugural conference last year, we have revised the format while retaining the original goal of creating a collaborative platform to engage academics and practitioners on mutually beneficial conversations. This year's theme is Leadership in the Informal Economy: Addressing Challenges from the Field, and in line with the theme, conference participants will be challenged to develop a framework of informal (emergent) leadership associated with successful poverty alleviation initiatives. The intent is to begin to develop a new knowledge structure that will help practitioners and researchers understand how to design meaningful interventions to improve the success rate of such initiatives.

Space is limited due to the adoption of the design thinking for scholars format. The conference utilizes a challenge-based, collaborative thinking-in-action methodology that allows researchers and practitioners to partner in analyzing knowledge and positing solutions to the leadership challenge identified in the conference theme.

We are currently finalizing the program including participant organizations involved in poverty alleviation initiatives. Details on pre-registering for the conference and the agenda/list of participating organizations will be posted to this list in the next two weeks as well as on the NLS website, so stay tuned for more information from us.

We hope you will consider participating in this conference and help shape research and practice in this very important area.

We wish you a pleasant Easter break and we hope to see you in Boston.

    Sincerely,
