  • 1.  Staging/ theatric approaches in entrepreneurship courses

    Posted 03-03-2012 16:05
    Dear colleagues,

I am currently rethinking my teaching approaches in entrepreneurship- and research methodology courses.
Reading through literature, I stumbled upon staging and theatric approaches, and found out that I am already using some of these to motivate students and help them focus. Small issues, such as ambient lights, the use of various media, story telling, sound and haptic effects, artificial pauses etc. are all seen as valuable means.

Therefore my question and invitation to you all,
please comment on whether and how you are using such effects in our own teaching and whether you can recommend any corresponding literature or courses.

    kind regards,

    Othmar Lehner

At Aberdeen Business School, I encourage my entrepreneurship students to engage with the entrepreneurship literature to identify theories, themes and stories because students absorb stories and themes easier than they do theories.

Theatric and storytelling approaches have been used to good effect at conferences before. I often engage in storytelling for presentational purposes by telling delegates that I am about to tell them a story. Getting them to sit round you in a circle works well. However, it depends on the venue, size of audience etc. Alistair R Anderson has written a paper on entrepreneurship and theatricality.

The wonderful 'Movements of Entrepreneurship' seminar series run by Daniel Hjorth / Chris Steyaert were classic examples of staged learning because everything from the venue to the classroom was planned and themed for a purpose. Elsewhere, Chris has staged plays instead of presentations. It might be useful to read the Special Edition 'Restorying entrepreneurship...' Lorraine Warren and I edited for Tamara. It has a section where Tony Watson presents a play, Anne Smith discusses creative writing and Di Slaney presents poetry.

Using alternative other genres of writing as alternative heuristics for teaching entrepreneurship has also been used before. For example Andrew Cardow (from New Zealand) and I wrote a working paper on using vampire stories as an alternative heuristic for teaching entrepreneurship.

Helle Neergaard / Stephan Korsgaard from Aarhus are well worth contacting as they are at the forefront of teaching using such innovative techniques.

I hope this helps you in your quest.
