  • 1.  Introductory entrepreneurship text?

    Posted 02-03-2012 01:00
    Dear List Members,

I'm getting ready to teach a half-semester introductory graduate entrepreneurship course that's a
prequel to our business plan and new venture finance courses. I am thinking that the focus of the
course would be either the concept of entrepreneurship or a focus on opportunity recognition.

If you can recommend a text (other than your own), I'd appreciate any suggestions. If anyone is
interested I'll be glad to share my results.

    Joel,

Since it is a graduate level course, I would propose one of Kirzner's short monographs, since he was one of the first talking about entrepreneurship as being alert to opportunity. His Competition & Entrepreneurship (1973) is probably the one that would be of greatest value to students, followed by Perception, Opportunity, and Profit: Studies in the Theory of Entrepreneurship (1979).

I particularly like Knight's classic treatise Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit (1921), since it clearly elaborates on the concept of entrepreneurship and how it relates to uncertainty and the firm. But considering your topic of choice, it might be only limitedly useful in the course.

    Best,

To echo Per -- Drucker's little 1993 "Innovation & Entrepreneurship" has held up really well. And avail <$10, I think

I would also suggest the new Steve Blank text for his new online "Lean Launchpad" course debuting in March. It focuses, obviously, on the lean startup model. Marrying that to Drucker & Kirzner, they've got three 'keeper' texts for under $50.

    Hi Joel:
The most widely used book for courses on opportunity recognition and assessment, though it is actually not a textbook but a trade book, is Mullins, The New Business Road Test, 3e 2010. It's also much cheaper for students than any of the textbooks. If you want to teach students to DO entrepreneurship and develop their opportunity assessment skills and capabilities, use it. If you just want to teach students ABOUT entrepreneurship, any of the textbooks will do.
