    Hi Todd,

I've co-authored several graphic novels that might be intriguing to use as a supplement for your course since they are fairly inexpensive (about $20) and embrace a creative format. The books are accompanied by powerpoint notes and an instructor manual with many activities that might work in your class.

Atlas Black: Managing to Succeed tells the story of two college seniors who embark on starting their own enterprise. The book covers key concepts often covered in management classes (Five forces, generic strategies, etc.). I've used the book in my strategic management classes at both the undergrad and MBA levels.

Chapter 1 of the first book is posted at http://www.flatworldknowledge.com/node/15264 if you want to preview our work, and Chapter 6 of the second book is also available for your viewing athttp://www.flatworldknowledge.com/node/128047.

Tales of Garcón: The Franchise Players tells the story of a charismatic entrepreneur named Garcón who tries to direct the destiny of the family-owned hotel that he created. The family's plans take an unexpected turn when a mysterious investor offers to become the hotel's first franchisee. The book covers key concepts from franchising such as advertising fees, business format franchising, franchise fees, product franchising, residual claimant, royalties, franchise disclosure document, and dozens of other key issues for franchisors/ franchisees and family businesses.

The first chapter can be viewed on line at the following link:

    http://www.flatworldknowledge.com/node/414045

All the books are available on Amazon.com or through the publisher's website.

Best of luck with your classes!

Tina Seelig in the engineering group at Stanford is a guru on creativity and such. Google STVP for some of her stuff. If you think business model innovation could be a theme for your course, then check out Mullins and Komisar, Getting to Plan B: Breaking Through to a Better Business Model, for which there is a growing cache of cases and teaching materials at the book's website, www.getting-to-plan-b.com.

    Hi Todd

I had reviewed a series of books myself (we're launching a new, application-oriented entrepreneurship minor) that I'd be happy to send you, and also came across a very helpful site that contains book reviews of other materials.  It's at www.innovationtools.com/articles/bookreviewheadlines.asp

I'm basically using Druckers "Innovation and Entrepeneurship" but still working on other readings.

I'd be very interested in what kind of response you received, and if you got ay exercises off of the listserve.

    Thanks

    Hi Todd,

I use "How to Think Like Einstein" by Scott Thorpe along with a packet of articles I have compiled from HBR and entrepreneurship books.

It is for an undergrad course- and the students really like the Thorpe book (focused on the creative process) and like many of the articles.

    Hi Todd,

You might want to take a look at my new book, inGenius: A Crash Course on Creativity. It was released two weeks ago. The book is based upon the course I've taught on creativity and innovation at Stanford School of Engineering for the past 12 years, and includes lots of classroom activities.

Also, my last book, What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20, also has a lot of specific classroom exercises related to innovation and entrepreneurship.

    All the best,
    Tina

I had reviewed a series of books myself (we're launching a new,

you, and also came across a very helpful site that contains book reviews
    of other materials.  It's at

I'm basically using Druckers "Innovation and Entrepeneurship" but still

I am seeing some great suggestions for a creativity course. Thanks Todd for raising the point.

I have a related question for those of you currently teaching a creativity and innovation course in your undergraduate programs. Can you tell me what, if any pre-requisites, your students must have before being allowed to take this course?

    Thanks.

    All the best,
    Tina

To satisfy the administrative types, we have Principles of Management as a listed prerequisite, however, we've also tagged it with a "or by permission of the instructor."  This way, students from other colleges that don't have any core business courses (e.g. Parks & Recreation, Law Enforcement and Justice, the science fields) have the option to take this course.  They cannot, however, take the business plan or the capstone Ent course without pre-requisite principles courses in accounting / finance, marketing, and management.

A good swap out for Principles of Management may be Managing for Results (also by Drucker). It covers some accounting systems, but really does a good job o breaking down opportunities and managing for opportunities.

The prereq for my 300-level CIE course is upper division business status (i.e., they've cleared the hurdle of getting into the business school which is impacted).  Thus, they've taken two ACCT courses, Business Law, Business Writing, two ECON courses, and either PSYC or SOC 100.

I am seeing some great suggestions for a creativity course. Thanks Todd for raising the point.

I have a related question for those of you currently teaching a creativity and innovation course in your undergraduate programs. Can you tell me what, if any pre-requisites, your students must have before being allowed to take this course?

    Thanks.

    Hi Todd,

I use "How to Think Like Einstein" by Scott Thorpe along with a packet
of articles I have compiled from HBR and entrepreneurship books.

It is for an undergrad course- and the students really like the Thorpe
book (focused on the creative process) and like many of the articles.

    Hi Todd

I had reviewed a series of books myself (we're launching a new,
application-oriented entrepreneurship minor) that I'd be happy to send
you, and also came across a very helpful site that contains book reviews
    of other materials.  It's at
    www.innovationtools.com/articles/bookreviewheadlines.asp

I'm basically using Druckers "Innovation and Entrepeneurship" but still
    working on other readings.

I'd be very interested in what kind of response you received, and if
you got ay exercises off of the listserve.

    Thanks
