  • 1.  IP Deals for our students - More Patent Search Sites

I should add to my earlier response the following which was gleaned at the GCEC conference on Saturday at USC Marshall.  An Entrepreneurship Center Director with an expertise in technology licensing informed me that patent searches are probably performed by attorneys and paralegals on two websites that are publically available and free to use. Therefore, he doesn't believe it is worth paying for a search anymore, so long as you are confident that you can think of all reasonably synonymous phraseology.  www.sumobrain.com and www.patsnap.com are the recommended sites. I can already see they are far easier to use and more comprehensive than the USPTO.gov site.

Can anyone share (on the list to via email to me personally) what kind of deals or arrangements they;ve been able to put together to help get their students legal help for pursuing IP (esp. patents). Also, where there are costs involved, what is being charged for what type of work?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

I've worked for a number of years on projects with Pillsbury and would agree with Geoff. The one area where specialist can add value is in searching beyond the databases, ie in the public domain. In one case I recall that it cost around $1000 to conduct the preliminary search. The database portion turned up nothing, however a comprehensive web search search did. The client was advised that filing for a patent was still possible, but would probably be more costly.
