Following the ICSB 2012 World Conference, the International Small Business Journal (ISBJ) will publish a Special Issue on the topic Leading from the Edge: Pioneering Entrepreneurial Behaviour. As entrepreneurs and small firms increasingly operate in environments requiring behavior that can be considered pioneering, it is fitting to highlight conduct that "leads from the edge." These environments may be perceived as hostile or high risk, yet can also spawn new areas for research. For instance, new methods of trading, financial transactions, immigrant communities, or "untried" technologies can emerge from these developing environments. Moreover, the same can result from marginal economies with significant degrees of political unrest, or in post-disaster economies. In such socio-political environments rife with uncertainty, entrepreneurial behaviour must be particularly pioneering, creative, and innovative in order to be sustainable. Authors should address the main theme of the conference, "Leading from the Edge," and are encouraged to make their own interpretations of categories that may include entrepreneurial behavior that is in accordance with the theme. Potential indicative categories include pioneering entrepreneurial behaviour in areas such as post-disaster economies, highly marginal economies, the "informal economy," legitimizing "illegal" entrepreneurship, and economies characterized by political unrest. Papers will be subject to the normal double blind review process and are expected to be presented at ICSB 2012, although we do not exclude other contributions. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the International Small Business Journal, found at http://isb.sagepub.com/.
