The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC, see
www.musc.edu) invites nominations and
applications for the position of Director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). MUSC
is in a period of sustained growth in its research, medical and service operations, and consequently is a
leader in technology development in the Southeast. Similarly, South Carolina has invested substantial
resources in promoting economic development through its SmartState™ Program (formerly known as
the Centers of Economic Excellence Program). Recognizing the importance of Innovation and
Entrepreneurship as a focus in its current Strategic Plan (www.musc.edu/strategicplan), MUSC is
committed to the establishment of a culture and infrastructure that supports entrepreneurial activities by
the entire complement of its employees. The CIE will provide resources and expertise for technology
commercialization to the MUSC community, and will work collaboratively with the Foundation for
Research Development and the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute.
We are seeking well-qualified candidates for the position of Director of the CIE. The Director will serve
in a high-level role within MUSC to implement and oversee the operations, assessment and growth of
the CIE. Candidates for the position of CIE Director must have a documented history of successful
commercialization of medical innovations, preferably with previous leadership experience within the
environment of an academic medical center. Additionally, documented success in securing funding
from commercial and philanthropic sources will be a significant selection criterion. Salary will be
commensurate with experience.
MUSC is a freestanding academic health sciences center with approximately 1,500 faculty members
located in the beautiful, historic city of Charleston. MUSC is engaged in research, teaching and health
service activities statewide, with annual funding for health research of more than $240M. More than
2,400 students in six colleges (Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine,
Nursing, and Pharmacy) study for degrees at the baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and other
professional levels. The University also provides residency training for over 500 graduate health
professionals.
