Research interest in the role of enterprise-led and market-based approaches to poverty alleviation has grown tremendously in the Academy over the last several years. As more management researchers design empirical studies that include low-income individuals and communities in less developed countries and emerging markets, many persistent and common challenges in collecting quality data are surfacing. Regardless of the methodological approach – surveys, ethnographies, qualitative case studies, experiments, etc. – the more experienced scholars in this area can contribute to the development of this field of research by helping the next generation of researchers avoid common perils and pitfalls in data collection. The purpose of this PDW is to further enhance the quality of empirical research conducted in the field of business and poverty alleviation. It is open to all senior and junior scholars and PhD students. The workshop will open with participant introductions, and then will be followed by presentations from three senior scholars on their challenges in obtaining quality data through varied methodological approaches. After a networking break, 6-8 small-group roundtable discussions will be facilitated by senior scholars that will provide an opportunity for all participants to receive feedback on current or proposed research projects. The PDW will conclude with a plenary panel of scholars to discuss common themes and issues in the quest for quality data. This workshop is the fourth consecutive PDW at the Academy that has focused on key issues of interest to the business and poverty alleviation research community.
