    Abstract

Capitalism is at a crossroads and innovation is central to meeting the challenges for the 21st century. In this session we wish to explore how Western management could possibly learn from Eastern practices to innovation. We focus on innovation on the product and service level, the business model and organizational level as well as the national and system-level approaches to innovation.

    Product and Service level innovation

Falguni Sen will provide insights from his research with Western Health Care companies and their attempts to learn from the "East" with regard to product innovation. He will focus on the role of  "Eastern" thought patterns that allow certain types of innovation to occur readily in places such as India and China.

    Business Model and Organizational Innovation

Tina Dacin will elaborate on her perspective of social innovation and business model development occurring in the "East" (e.g. social enterprise).  She will discuss the portability of such business model innovation and specify the critical factors for 'learning from the East'.

    National and System-level innovation

Anil Gupta will share how India is restructuring its approach to innovating, which the West might be able to learn from.  As the founder of the Honey Bee Network and in his advisory role to the Indian Government he will present examples of bottom-up innovation for environmental, social and commercial ends.

Alnoor Ebrahim will kick off our discussion on how the West can indeed learn from the East with regard to innovation.
