    Posted 07-05-2011 10:27
    Dear all,

At Vlerick Management School we are currently performing qualitative
longitudinal case study research regarding business models. I was
wondering if anybody in this audience has experience with software to
organize and analyze qualitative data of different kinds. I have been
looking at Atlas and QRS Nvivo amongst others. If this sounds familiar one
    way or another:

    • What software do you know?
    • What was your experience with this software?

    Thank you for reading.

Nvivo is the most popular and well known qualitative analysis
software. Some people (including me) find it's interface very
frustrating, and it is very expensive to buy for a research team.
However, the advantage of using NVivo is that most of the textbooks on
qualitative analysis use it as an example, so it's very easy to get
help or support with it. And much like IBM, no one ever gets questions
    about why they chose Nvivo.

I've been very happy with a new program called Dedoose
(www.dedoose.com), which is an on-line qualitative analysis system.
The advantage of this is that it is very easy for a team to
collaborate with, no matter what operating system they're using or
where they are. It's also much cheeper, at $6 per month, per person.
However, it's very, very new and not all the features are working
perfectly yet, though I've found the staff very responsive and willing
to implement new features suggested by users.

    I hope this helps,

    Dear Mathias,

It is difficult to recommend any of the two suggested programs. I am familiar with Atlas.ti and found it very simple and useful to use. However, people who use Nvivo may say the same.

My recommendation is that you attend to one of the PDW on qualitative research at AoM to get familiar with the process and other alternative programs. I found it very useful last year.

    Best,

    Henry

    Dear Mathias

ATLAS.ti (www.atlasti.com) is very common for qualitative research. We use it here in Bern and I know several other institutions in German-speaking Europe that use it as well. Atlas is quite OK regarding its functions. But ATLAS is just a tool. Do not overestimate it. Most of the work is thinking. I am not familiar with Nvivo. But all in all the software should fit your workflow. Therefore I recommend to use both as trial versions or at other universities to see which of them fits your needs.

    Dear Mathias,

I am familiar with Nvivo and used and still use it in my research, also analyzing longitudinal qualitative data (see e.g., http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/13691060802151960). The older version of Nvivo looks more user friendly, though it might be a matter of practice (i switched to new version one year ago). what the old version has is a very good set of instructional videos that explain the process much more effectively (provided over the web). and clearly, new version has more options, though the principles remained the same. i find this book also useful for beginners Qualitative Data Analysis with NVivo by Dr. Patricia Bazeley. hope this helps.

    Dear Mathias,

Atlas, in my experience, is more intuitive and easier to learn. The company also offers great online tutorials for self learning. The key selling point for me is their low-priced student version. If students will use this software frequently, and need a copy for their personal computers, then I would go with Atlas. Nvivo only offer 12-month subscriptions. Atlas allows you to buy the program with no license expiration for $99 US, 75 Euro.

    Here is what the say:
    ATLAS.ti Student License
The ATLAS.ti student license is available at a very significant discount to eligible individuals after submitting proof of eligibility. This license is strictly for use in the licensee's education only and cannot be upgraded. Other than that, it is 100% identical to the full regular license, i.e. it is NOT limited in use period or functionality.

    Cheer,
    Craig

    Hi Mathias,

Try MaxQDA. You can download the trial version. I personally think that it is much user friendly as compared to NVivo especially if you are analyzing the interview scripts and breaking them down into several themes.

    Best wishes

    Thank you.
