A variety of disciplines provides empirical evidence about factors
which impede, delay or even block innovation, so-called barriers.
However, those studies are characterized by a lack of theoretical
foundation. We invite researchers to focus on this void: Which
theories could/can explain the occurrence of barriers and how could
they contribute to barrier research?
What hampers innovation? The question is answered by various
researchers from multiples disciplines with varying theoretical
background and empirical experience. They provide empirical evidence
of multiple factors which impede, delay or even block innovation,
so-called barriers. We conducted a systematic review of more than
one-hundred empirical studies on barriers. Two major findings of the
analysis are: (1) a lack of scholarly discussion, and (2) a lack of
theoretical foundation.
Background:
The citation analysis of one-hundred empirical studies on barriers
indicated a lack of scholarly discussion between the barriers
researchers. Therefore, the AOM PDWs 2009 and 2010 brought researchers
on barriers together to discuss the state of the art and future
empirical and theoretical challenges of barrier research. The aim was
to enhance scholarly discussion and cross-fertilization. Roundtable
discussion focused on barriers to organizational and technological
change. The discussion raised theoretical and methodological questions
how to identify, measure and overcome barriers. Based on multi-level
analysis (Klein & Kozlowski, 2000) the discussion was differentiated
according different level of analysis: individual, group, organization
and external environment.
The PDWs confirmed the results of the systematic review of empirical
studies on barriers: There is a lack of theory to explain the
occurrence of barriers to innovation. Therefore, we decided to
organize a caucus, which is devoted to barriers and theory.
Caucus:
The caucus will be informal and open to all, but will have some
structure. Depending on who attends, we will organize people by the
level of analysis of their research focus: individual, group,
organization or environment. They will discuss which theories from
psychology, sociology, economics etc. are suitable to contribute to a
theoretical explanation of the occurrence of barriers to innovation.
They will share these insights with the large group and together, we
will identify the contribution of each theory to the barrier research.
