If so, the MOC Division is sponsoring “Reviewing in the Rough: A Professional Development Workshop for Doctoral Students” at this year’s Academy of Management Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas (abstract below). ABSTRACT
Reviewing is a critical “professional responsibility” and an integral part of participating in the academic community (Trevino, 2008). Yet Tsang and Frey (2007: 129) noted that “there is no formal training for referees who usually pick up their review skills through learning by doing.” This raises a perplexing question for doctoral students: how can they develop critical reviewing skills when there are so few opportunities for students to practice the art of reviewing? This professional development workshop (PDW) provides students with a rare opportunity to learn and practice the art of reviewing. Prior to the conference, students will be asked to prepare a formal review of an original submission of Scott DeRue’s manuscript “The Impact of Feedback Frequency and Positive Affective State on Task Performance: Challenging the “More is Better” Assumption.” (Lam, DeRue, Karam, & Hollenbeck, in press). The actual workshop will consist of two sessions: (1) a panel session and (2) an interactive session. The panel session will provide students an opportunity to gain key insights about quality reviewing from former Editors, Associate Editors, and Editorial Board Members (Martin Kilduff, Michael Pratt, Kyle Lewis, and Glen Kreiner). In the interactive session, students will break into small groups, facilitated by an experienced faculty member (Gayle Baugh, John Bingham, Brayden King, Ravi Madhavan, Suzanne Masterson, David Mayer, Ryan Quinn, Nancy Rothbard, or Eduardo Salas), to discuss and receive feedback on their formal reviews. Scott DeRue will then discuss the actual reviews of his original submission and how they helped shape the final manuscript.
