NOTE: While an open question to all members of this listserver, the question below is primarily directed toward faculty hiring committee members here in the US. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Good morning,
Over the past weekend, a very dear friend shared that she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in South America (topic not important). A part of her general happiness about the award is that she would be able to list the scholarship on her CV and this in turn should greatly help her in her upcoming job search. One of our other friends stated that unless the hiring faculty members knew much about the Fulbright system or the award itself, it would be a "nice" line item but not much else. Than all eyes were upon me. Having no clue, thought I would ask the experts here on this listserver.
My general question to you if,
- you have sat on a hiring committee, and
- you have lead a faculty search.
Situation/Question:
Your department or college/school is currently searching for a new faculty member (assistant or associate level) to start in the Fall. You receive an application from a potential candidate that she will be on a Fulbright Scholarship in the fall for two months and can report late semester and start teaching classes in the Spring. Further she is very interested in your program.
- Does having the Fulbright on the CV have any pull with your hiring decision? Or does having a Fulbright add value for/to the potential candidate?
- Since the scholarship is when the hiring start time is, will this have a negative effect on her candidacy?
This is a real situation so any other timely feedback that you can provide would be of great assistance. Looking forward to hearing from you.
