  • 1.  Social entrepreneurship text?

    Posted 12-15-2010 17:19
    All:

Has anyone used a social entrepreneurship text that they love? I need a great text for a spring course. This is my first time teaching this specific course, geared towards seniors in the business management department. Colorful, informative, case-study driven (if possible), and one you have used would be ideal. Just send along a book/publisher name if possible. Regards, and thanks in advance.

Vern - lots of texts, none are perfect (duh) so I'd encourage you to shop around.

Figure out what you are trying to get the students to learn -the desired cognitive changes - then see which texts help the most.

[Insert rant about the need to focus on problem-based learning in any entrepreneurial course.. and social entrepreneurship makes a perfect venue for PBL...So focus on real projects! ;) ]

Want good stories? Two non-texts that I got to see up close at the recent NYU Satter conference (thanks again, Jill!) were:
    a) the new book by David Bornstein & Susan Davis and especially
    b) The Blue Sweater by Jacqueline Novogratz, the brains behind the Acumen Fund. I have cc'ed her deputy, Wei Wei Hsing, who would happily send you a copy. I really enjoyed the book

I don't have my own copy of Dave & Susan's book (basically, I spaced on getting an exam copy, LOL) but a quick scan was thoroughly encouraging.

    Both books are affordable.

    Brilliant!

Thanks, Norris. I just got two wonderful recommendations from a Badger at Wisconsin, so this adds to my Christmas reading list. Well, I suspect I cannot get them next week, but will be reading and reviewing shortly.

Thanks very much, and it seems the entrepreneurship community is growing -- but still intimate and user-friendly. I do appreciate the help, and I think problem-based projects -- and stories -- would work wonderful for my group of seniors here at Chico State.

    Regards,

    Vern Andrews
