  • 1.  Developing a New Undergraduate Syllabus (course) Entitled, "Technology Entrepreneurship"

    Dear Colleagues,

I have been assigned the task of developing a new undergraduate syllabus (course) entitled, "Technology Entrepreneurship" that will be taught in the College of Engineering & Applied Science and will probably be open to business students as well. We are not sure at what level yet. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share their experiences in teaching this course (e.g., syllabus, materials used, successes, failures, etc.).  Thank you in advance for any assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Hi Todd:
Get in touch with Tom Byers and/or Tina Seelig at Stanford's eng school. Tom has a tech e'ship book that might fit. And you might consider The New Business Road Test (see www.newbusinessroadtest.com) and Getting to Plan B (www.getting-to-plan-b.com) as well. There you will find instructor resources for both books, if you are planning to have your students to "do" something entrepreneurial with their tech ideas rather than just "hear about" it.
    Best,
    John

  • 3.  Developing a New Undergraduate Syllabus (course) Entitled, "Technology Entrepreneurship"

    Hi Todd,

We have struggled with a similar course and I agree with some of the comments that Joel made.  If it is offered through the engineering school it is unlikely that you will get many business students to enroll.  We had a course entitled "Biomedical Entrepreneurship" and I think the name itself kept business students out.  We are having much better luck with offering courses through the business school and then marketing them to the engineers.  Our mechanical engineering students can now take our entrepreneurship courses for their "technical electives".  While the engineering students may not recognize the need for entrepreneurship education we have had great interaction with the professors and associate deans who make the decisions about course offerings and are beginning to promote our courses.  We've also gotten engineers involved in entrepreneurship by inviting them to our Entrepreneurship Club meetings-This semester we have a senior mechanical engineer in our leadership team.

I agree that the engineering students have little to no knowledge about the business concepts, but these tend to be pretty smart and pretty dedicated students.  I have several every semester in my Intro Entrepreneurship Course and while it takes them a while to understand the concepts they tend to be excellent students-often ending up with the highest GPAs in the class.  Plus they provide rich conversation, insights, and real products to the other students.  Next fall we will be offering our first cohort of certificate students-20 engineers and 20 business students who will work together for 2 years.  I'll have better insight once we've gone down that road.

    Best of luck

    Dawn
