  • 1.  Emotion / Affect and Entrepreneurship

    Posted 04-28-2010 09:49
    Hi Everyone,

I'm interested in learning more about the relationship between affect / emotion and entrepreneurial processes such as new business creation  and was hoping that some members of the ENTREP community could direct me to resources that would bring me up to speed on the topic. I'm looking for some good survey articles as well as empirical and theoretical work that looks at both the light and dark side of emotion's influence on entrepreneurial processes. Pointers to illustrative case studies and company examples would also be very much welcomed.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions.

    Hi Eric,

I'd recommend joining the EMONET list serv for some good recommendations http://www.emotionsnet.org/. Also have a look at the book series 'Research on Emotion in Organizations'.

    Good luck!

There was just a special journal issue on this but they are still in R&R on the articles,  but I'd ping Melissa Cardon at Pace. (Some of those authors will likely respond directly as well.) I also really liked Robert Baron's major review article in AMR. On the European front, Isabell Welpe (TUM), Dietmar Grichnik (St Gallen) and Theresa Michl (LMU) & others are doing some outstanding work (I'll cc'ed all of these, just in case they don't follow ENTREP). I will immodestly add some work I've been involved with led by Malin Brannback(Abo) & Alan Carsrud (Ryerson).

All these folks are doing great work and they are great people too. Let me know if I can help further!

Many thanks to everyone who took me to school on the subject of the influence of emotions on strategic and entrepreneurial decision-making. In less than 24 hours, I received over 10 responses with many useful suggestions and pointers.  Below is a summary of what I received. Clearly, I have just begun to scratch the surface of this interesting field with this list. If I receive many more suggestions / pointers, I will add them to the list and post the expanded list. One interesting thing  (to me) was that it is apparent that many scholars with ties to Canada and Montreal have done interesting work in the area.

    Here's the summary,

Names of scholars with interesting work pertaining to emotions and decision-making (I added google-scholar links for convenience).
