CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
Professional Development Workshop at AOM 2012
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP: BUSINESS MODELS IN THE FORMAL AND INFORMAL ECONOMY
The workshop will take place on Saturday August 4th from 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Sheraton Boston Hotel, Back Bay Ballroom B (Boston, Massachusetts).
Abstract
The business model lens is a useful way of looking at how the configuration of resources and processes not only within the boundaries of the business firm but also within its stakeholder environment lays the groundwork for value creation. Taking the business model and not the firm as the basic unit of analysis is particularly valuable for the field of social entrepreneurship (SE) in both formal and informal economies. Business model theorizing, however, is still in its infancy. Moreover, there is very little research on business models in a SE context. We therefore want to use this workshop to advance our understanding of how social value creation in formal and informal economies takes place. In the PDW, we want to focus on the following key questions:
1. What are the benefits of taking the business model perspective for SE research?
2. What are specific challenges with regard to business modeling in an SE and informal economy context?
3. What are promising research avenues to advance our understanding of SE business models?
Input presentations to these key questions will be given by:
§ Dr. Adam J. Bock, University of Edinburgh, UK
§ Professor Christian Seelos, IESE, Spain, and Stanford University, USA
§ Professor Shaker Zahra, University of Minnesota, USA
At the end of the workshop, we have allocated time for a get-together over coffee.
