PhD / Post-Doc Positions in Entrepreneurship

TUM School of Management has recently created several new positions in the area of Entrepreneurship as a part of a recent strategic expansion of Technische Universität München's efforts to realize its vision of being "The Entrepreneurial University." To support our growth ambitions, we are looking for PhD ("Wissenschaftliche(r) Mitarbeiter(in)") or Post-Doctorate candidates, starting in September 2012. More information about the position and the school follows.

    Position

We are looking for dynamic, self-motivated individuals with a clear desire to embark on an academic career. You will be joining a vibrant and ambitious team of young, internationally-minded academics aspiring to the highest standards of research and teaching. Collaboration with other members of the university and our international network will be actively supported. From the first year, you will contribute to our teaching program, including the opportunity to design and teach your own courses.

Following the standard German model, successful candidates will be employed as full-time (100%) research assistants at level E 13 TV-L of the German public sector pay scale. While the specific salary is determined based on individual qualification, the minimum gross monthly salary already exceeds €3,100 (more information is available at http://portal.mytum.de/archiv/form_personal/archive_folder.2005-11-24.1472782828/20100419_101551/index_html). This generous salary is awarded as candidates will be required to complete teaching as well as administrative duties – candidates will be able to spend about half of their time on conducting research. Contracts will initially be limited to a two-year-period, but can be extended by several years.

Current focus areas for the two available positions within the Entrepreneurship area include open innovation, organization design, capabilities, new venture internationalization, networks and strategic alliances, venture capital, and start-up success factors. You will be welcome to pursue your own ideas where related to these topics.

    Requirements

PhD position: You have (or are close to completing) an outstanding degree in management or a related subject (e.g., management information systems or organizational sociology) with a focus on entrepreneurship, strategy, technology and innovation management, organization, or organization theory. Furthermore, we expect at least basic knowledge of statistics and empirical research.

Post-doc position: you have completed (or are close to completing) a PhD degree in one of the above or a related subject, with solid training in either qualitative or quantitative empirical research.

Both: An excellent grasp of written and spoken English is mandatory. Beyond any formal requirements, we are looking for enthusiastic, curious team players willing to take on responsibility.

    Application procedure

Please send a cover letter (specifying your research interests, motivation for an academic career, and possible starting date), your resume, and relevant certificates and/or report cards (copies are fine) via email only to Oliver Alexy (o.alexy@tum.de) and Hana Milanov (hana.milanov@tum.debefore July 27, 2012. Academic references or examples of academic work are not required, but will be assessed favorably. Please also direct any questions you may about the positions to the above email addresses.

Applicants for the rank of post-doctoral position should submit at least one academic reference, as well as a job market paper, a statement of research interests, and an overview of accumulated teaching experience.

As part of the excellence initiative of the German federal and state governments, Technische Universität München has been pursuing the strategic goal of substantially increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching. Thus, female candidates are explicitly encouraged to apply for this position. Preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same level of qualifications.

    About the School

Founded in 2002, TUM School of Management is the business school of Technische Universität München (TUM), one of the leading technical universities in the world (http://www.wi.tum.de/en/home/). The School has about 25 professors, including seven  in Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Finance and Technology and Innovation Management. The business school ranks highly in recent academic and employer rankings, and several members of faculty featured prominently in the 2009 Handelsblatt ranking of German management professors, especially in the "young academics" (under 40 years of age) category. Due to its roots in the natural and engineering sciences, TUM features a distinct culture of technology-based entrepreneurship – its motto is "The entrepreneurial university" – and has very strong links to industry.

The School's research and teaching activities in Entrepreneurship and Innovation are supported by TUM's Center for Innovation and Business Creation (UnternehmerTUM), which features a strong team of more than 40 investment professionals and entrepreneurs who jointly collaborate with Faculty in education, funding, and development of startups and innovation commercialization (http://www.unternehmertum.de/index.html). In addition, the School has strong ties with a business community in Munich and beyond.

The main campus of TUM School of Management is located in the heart of Munich, close to the business and cultural center of the city. Munich is consistently highly ranked as one of the cities with high quality of life, much owing to its excellent international connections, robust infrastructure, unique cultural heritage, and geographical position - located at the very edge of Alps, and surrounded by lakes, Munich offers an ideal combination of exciting urban living and activities in nature year-round. Both world-class German companies, such as BMW, Allianz and Siemens, and global players (e.g. Microsoft, General Electric, and Intel) have a strong presence in the region, which is also proud of its strong entrepreneurial community - for example, a strong biotechnology cluster resides just outside the city limits.
