  • 1.  seeking input: short, fun, paperback technology entrepreneurship book

    Posted 01-26-2010 13:21

I am teaching an undergraduate business plan class this summer called Entrepreneurial Projects.  Half of the business plans I expect will be about microfinance, and thus I am requiring Yunus' book Banker to the Poor.   The students already own a general Entrepreneurship text (Barringer & Ireland) from the previous course.  I am looking to balance the Yunus book with something equivalently inspiring and easy-to-read that would speak of technology entrepreneurship.  A biography would be fine.  Although I am open to movie suggestions, these students have already seen 'Pirates of Silicon Valley', 'Startup.com,' and the 'Flash of Genius.'  I think MyStartUpLife (being written by a 19 year old) would not go over well with a 25-30  year old undergraduate audience who are paying for their own education.  Any ideas?

I didn't write it (some guy named Drucker wrote it instead....LOL.)

Peter Drucker's 1993 "Innovation & Entrepreneurship" - short paperback, avail cheap on Amazon. Talks about tech & social. I give away copies of this.

Also, if you want something more textbook-ish but not, Kathy Allen has a couple of great options in paperback including one specifically on tech entrep.(I'll cc her in case she's not on ENTREP listserv).

Hello! No doubt one of the best book for what you need (which I have used in my entrepreneurship classes) is "High St@kes, No Prisoners" by Charles Ferguson. It's hilarious, a true story with plenty of obnoxious characters (including the author) and drama on all sides of the startup that created what eventually became Microsoft Front Page. There used to be a paperback version of it available.

    Good luck!

    Hiya all,

Drucker's book is quite an easy read, however if it's fun you are looking for and not 'run of the mill' text books you could always try Max Barry Jennifer Government. It is a great 'Airport' fiction book on what happens when entrepreneurial marketing is taken one step too far.  I use a fair bit of fiction. I also use full length feature films and history. (along with more mundane things like entrepreneurship text books)

    Enjoy the year

    Kind Regards

    Andrew

My favorite fun read is Accidental Empires by Robert X. Cringley (InfoWorld's  original in-house curmugeon and muck-raker). It is the story of the start of the PC industry, with all the names we know now - Gates, Jobs and a host of others. It is out in paperback and available new and used, so it can be had inexpensively.

It is also the basis for the BBC film Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires (to see it online, go to http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/triumph-nerds-rise-accidental-empires/), so you can offer your students a multimedia experience.

The other fun read (although from an entirely different perspective) is The Republic of Tea: The Story of the Creation of a Business, as Told Through the Personal Letters of Its Founders by Mel and Patricia Ziegler. It is amazingly real-life with every note and document they created in the process of starting and eventually selling the firm.

    Hope these help.

    Hi Geoff,

I use the book by Wayne McVicker - Starting Something  in my capstone entrepreneurship class to introduce a tech based business that went from start up to IPO in fairly breathtaking succession. It is a nice  read (from  the entrepreneur's side) of the travails of launching Neoforma (NASDAQ: NEOF).  It is very  realistic, so may not be exactly inspirational if that is your main need.

    Thanks,

Any ideas?
