Entrepreneurship Capstone Courses at CSU East Bay

    Hi Eric:

I teach entrepreneurship capstone courses at California State University, East Bay.   These capstone experiences are offered at both the graduate and the undergraduate level.  California State University, East Bay is an AACSB accredited institution located in Hayward, California on the east side of San Francisco Bay.

California State University, East Bay is on the quarter system and it is unrealistic to expect students to be able to practice entrepreneurship in a 10 week learning experience.  Therefore, my former colleague, Professor Emeritus Ric Singson, developed an undergraduate entrepreneurship course based on engaging students in consulting to small business.  Entrepreneurship 4490, Practicum in Small Business Management has been offered at our university for over 20 years although it just received the Entrepreneurship designation in 2004.  I moved Dr. Singson's work into the graduate level in 2003 as a course titled Entrepreneurship 6490, Entrepreneurship Practicum.  All graduate business students have the choice between an entrepreneurship capstone course and a strategy capstone course.

In my 6 years at California State University, East Bay, I have facilitated a total of 63 consulting projects involving 174 students.  Student response has been overwhelmingly positive and the feedback from our small business clients has been excellent.

I am happy to supply syllabi from ENTR 4490 and ENTR 6490 for any of the ENTREP list server subscribers who might be interested in seeing how these capstone courses are laid out.  ENTREP –L does not allow attachments, so please write to me (brian.mckenzie@csueastbay.edu) with your e-mail address and I will respond with the syllabi as an attached pdf file.

    Subject: [ENTREP] Non-Strategy Capstones?

    Hi,

I am currently teaching an undergraduate strategy capstone to 20(ish) year-old students and am considering if there is a better way of achieving the learning objectives of a capstone. In this respect, I am wondering if anyone has any experience regarding the use of an entrepreneurship (or IB) course as a capstone for undergrad or MBAs. Also, any information regarding AACSB or EQUIS regs on this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your input on this matter.

    Eric
