    CALL FOR PAPERS

Human Resource Management Practices in the Family Business Setting

    Deadline: November 1, 2014

While the past ten years have seen tremendous growth in the quantity and quality of scholarly research on family businesses, nearly all of that research has focused on the decisions of, or the interactions within, the family unit.  Given the fact that family businesses are responsible for over half of employment in countries around the globe, surprisingly little is known about the human resource practices of these firms.  With this in mind, this Special Issue has two broad purposes in mind:

    1) Explore the state of the art of research on the human resource practices in family business.

    2) Increase our understanding of how the use of human resource management practices influences innovation, growth and performance in family firms.

The Journal strives to create a bridge between theory (academic research) and real-world practices, allowing academicians to learn from practitioners and allowing practitioners to apply leading-edge research theories to their day-to-day operations. Papers submitted for the Special Issue should develop, test or extend theory, as well as provide meaningful implications for family business owners, managers, or HRM practitioners who work or consult for family businesses.

We encourage the submission of empirical, conceptual and literature review papers using diverse theoretical and methodological approaches. Suitable topics include but are not limited to:

    •          Comparisons of the HRM practices of family businesses and non-family businesses

    •          Training and development of family members in managerial or executive roles

    •          Recruitment, selection, hiring, retention and compensation of non-family managers and employees

    •          Best HRM practices associated with innovation, long-term performance, or transgenerational succession in family businesses

    •          Systems used to evaluate and appraise the performance of family and non-family employees

    •          Developing leadership in family firms

    •          The role of HRM practices in building trust, commitment, and identity in family firms

    •          HRM strategies of family businesses

    •          Ethical issues associated with HRM practices in family businesses

The deadline for paper submissions is November 1, 2014. To ensure your paper is considered for this Call, however, please answer "Yes" to the question regarding special issue submission and clearly label your submission for the "Family Business" in the text box provided. All articles will be double-blind reviewed.

    Submission Process

Manuscripts must be submitted electronically using the Journal's web-based submission and review website called Manuscript Central: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hrm. Electronic submission through Manuscript Central is required. Should you have problems, please contact Managing Editor Ellen McCarthy at emcc@umich.edu

When submitting through Manuscript Central, please submit the following documents:

    1. Document 1: A "blind" copy of your manuscript. Delete all author identification from this primary document. This document may include your tables and figures, or you may include tables and figures in separate documents.

    2. Document 2: Submit a separate document with information that would typically appear on the document's title page (title, author names, complete postal addresses, titles, affiliations, contact information including email, phone and fax.). This document may also include author biographies if you wish.

    3. Document 3: A cover letter addressed to the Editor(s) specifically identifying how the paper fits within the special section theme.
