Capturing individual histories and biographies allows organizational researchers to answer questions of how prior experience relates to individual and organizational outcomes, such as innovation, entrepreneurship and performance. Though biographical information from sources like resumes, directories and online biographies is becoming more accessible, gathering and adapting it into a usable form for research is not always straightforward. In this professional development workshop, we seek to consolidate the knowledge of organizational scholars who have collected, coded and analyzed biographical data in their research. We will address a number of sources for biographical data, discuss the benefits and pitfalls of using these data sources, and review their appropriateness for answering a variety of research questions.
